Anthony J. Terlato Honored with 2003 Norman M. Lipman Award
Prestigious Award Presented at Nashville?s Celebrated l?Ete du Vin Wine Auction
Lake Bluff, IL (August 19, 2003) - Anthony J. Terlato, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Terlato Wine Group, has been honored with the 2003 Norman M. Lipman Award. In presenting Terlato with the award dedicated to his late father, acclaimed wine distributor Robert Lipman cited the long-time Chicago area resident for his efforts in promoting fine quality wines in the United States during his almost half-century in the wine industry. The award was announced and presented on July 26 at Nashville?s 2003 l?Ete du Vin wine auction, which raised nearly $1 million for the American Cancer Society. Terlato was also the Guest of Honor at this year?s wine auction, making it the first time in the 13-year history of the Lipman Award that the award winner was also l?Ete du Vin?s honoree.
?I know my father would have been proud that the award bearing his name was presented to someone as highly regarded as Tony,? said Robert Lipman. ?Tony and our family's company share many of the same ideals. My father was dedicated to his community and his family, and for 50 years Tony and his family have given a tremendous amount to Chicago and the wine industry.?
?I was fortunate to work with Norman Lipman and he was an extraordinary individual. It is a tremendous honor to accept this award,? said Terlato, whose sons, William and John, are also executives of the Terlato Wine Group. ?I believe that quality is enduring, and I have committed myself, my family and my companies to excellence in fine wine and enhancing the role it plays in gastronomy, culture and quality of life. I hope that one day my grandchildren will look back on this honor and understand that their grandfather and fathers were among the pioneers in enhancing quality in the wine industry.?
Terlato began his career in the 1950s in his father?s retail wine and spirits store in Chicago. He went on to build an organization spanning virtually every aspect of the wine industry, including importing, distribution, marketing, wine production and vineyard ownership. In January 2003, Wine Enthusiast Magazine honored Terlato as its ?Man of the Year.? In presenting Terlato with its most prestigious award, the Wine Enthusiast editorial staff credited him with ?changing the way Americans drink,? by bringing quality Italian wines to the United States.
Presented annually at l?Ete du Vin, the Norman M. Lipman Award recognizes individuals in the wine and spirits industry of unique gifts and character. Terlato joins former honorees Robert Mondavi, wine collector Dr. Marvin Overton and Wine Spectator publisher Marvin Shanken in accepting this award. Nominees for the Award are proposed by groups and individuals associated with the wine and spirits industry throughout the world. The public commemoration of the Award is a specially commissioned sculpture, Man of Love and Wisdom, created by Tennessee artist Terry Williams and on permanent loan to St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.
L?Et? du Vin began in 1980 as an informal backyard gathering of Nashville wine lovers, and has since grown to its present status of an organization that produces wine-related auctions and events, from informal tastings to lavish black-tie affairs attended by wine enthusiasts from all over the world. In 1998, l?Et? du Vin became the first charity wine auction outside Napa Valley to surpass the million-dollar mark. In total, l?Et? du Vin has contributed more than $9 million to the American Cancer Society since its inception.
